Look Book: New Year's Eve 2016

Earlier this month, Ben and I went to his office holiday party. I noticed that a lot of woman were wearing glitter and sequins, and I got some serious bling envy. For someone that loves all things glitter, it made me realize my wardrobe is really lacking in that department. That's why when I found this sequin top on clearance at Kohl's, I bought it right away.

When I bought it, I knew that I had to wear it on New Year's Eve. I decided to go for a classic New Year's Eve look and wear just black, white, and silver. Remember my New Year's Eve nail art? I created it to match this outfit!

New Year's Eve 2016

Can you believe that 2016 is coming to an end already?! A coworker of mine says that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. 2016 has been...interesting to say the least. From politics, to the loss of so many great people (and gorillas), it has all been a hard pill to swallow. I have been trying for focus on the positives of what 2017 will bring. For me, my biggest focus will be on my wedding.

New Year's has always been one of my favorite holidays. Of course I love dressing up in gold, silver, and glitter. But I love how excited everyone gets siting together in front of the TV counting down. At the 10 second mark everyone counts and cheers in unison, and it's a neat feeling of togetherness that is so rare these days. While I am still skeptical of what 2017 will bring, I am trying to look forward to a night of celebrating.

And how do we celebrate around here? With New Years Eve nail art!

Look Book: Ugly Chanukkah Sweater

Every December, my coworker throws an ugly Christmas sweater party, Unfortunately, he always has it the same weekend I go to Texas to visit family for Chanukkah. When I first got invited to the party a few years ago, it made me realize that I don't have an ugly holiday sweater! Every year I meant to buy one, but I kept forgetting. This year, even though I couldn't make it to the party, I still got my ugly Chanukkah sweater!

Look Book: Tribal Leggings

I don't know where my head has been! I think I deleted a line from my planner by mistake, and it threw my blogging game off. I posted a Swatch Saturday post on a Wednesday! Also, a Look Book post I thought I had plans to post this month was completely gone. A mix of the holidays, plus a week long Texas vacation, also didn't help me get my head in the game.

Luckily I got over this little hiccup, and I am getting myself back on track. That means I am finally sharing that forgotten Look Book post! As I mentioned, my mom got me a some clothes as part of my birthday gift last month, and that they would be making an appearance on the blog. One outfit she got for me was this black top and tribal leggings.

Lapis Lazuli Leopard

I have been a crazy cat lady my whole life. When I was born, we had two cats, and ever since then I have never been cat-less. As a kid I loved wearing cat clothes (though now that I am in my mid-20's, I have been rocking the cat-wear again). As I got older, I fell in love with leopard print. Getting to express my love for cats with more mature clothes, what's better then that?

One way I like to rock leopard print is with nail art. I remember when I first did leopard nail art and learned how incredibly easy it was and how amazing it could look! Recently I felt like painting my nails blue, and then I realized it had been way too long since I had done leopard nail art. Then I remembered I had this nail art looked pinned, and I found my inspiration.

Swatch Saturday: Ciate Cookies and Cream

I love a good nude...nail polish that is. Get your head out of the gutter! While I have a special place in my heart for hot pink and glitter, there is something so classically beautiful a about nude nail polish. That's why I was super excited to swatch Ciate Cookies and Cream, from the 2015 Mini Mani Month subscription box.

Makeup Looks: Flower Child

I have mentioned it before, but I have always felt like a hippie at heart. Even though I never lived through them, I have heard the 60's were an amazing time. I love the music, the clothes, and how every one radiated peace and love.

People used to call hippies "flower children" because they would wear flowers in their hair. My mom told me that when she was in school, she used to paint students' faces with flowers. I love wearing flower accessories because it makes me feel like a flower child. When I saw this flower eyeliner makeup, I knew I needed to try it out!

Look Book: Olive Peplum

I wear a lot of peplum on the blog. Who am I kidding, I wear it a lot in real life too. My mom knows how much I love the style, and for my birthday this year sent me this amazing olive peplum top. I love everything about the top from the color, to the zipper. The mix of hi-lo and peplum is such a flattering cut for all body types! To show of the gorgeous cut of the top, I paired it with a simple black legging.

Sea Glass

Here's a little behind the scenes peek into my life: every Sunday I wake up, have coffee, clean up the house, and have lunch. Then I paint my nails, do makeup looks, and outfit photos. Since I end up traveling, or having visitors, a lot of the weekends, I don't always have time for my Sunday ritual of working on my blog posts. That means I often post my nail art a month or two after I create the look.

Then October happened, and I was creating and posting nail art only a week or two apart for Halloween. That meant that the nail art looks I did in August and September got put on hold. Now that I am getting back into the swing of things after the fall, I am going to be posting some older looks. like this one that was inspired by Nails Like Lace.

November 2016 Roundup

November is always a fun and excititng month for me. First of all, it's my birthday month! I had an amazing birthday this year. That day my coworkers surprised me with decorations and treats, and that night Ben and I celebrated out at dinner. I also got lots of amazing gifts from my friends and family. And then who can leave out Thanksgiving? For me, it's a whirl-wind of multiple dinners and family gatherings. I'm sad to see November end, since I'm not a fan of Decembers, but I do have a couple things I am looking forward to next month!

Makeup Looks: Chocolate Berry

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am all stuffed full of delicious food, and I get to do it all again today! All this talk of food has inspired this makeup look. While I love playing around with bright colors and dramatic looks, sometimes it's nice to put together a wearable look for family functions or a night out. One of my favorite ways to do that is with pink and brown.

For this makeup look I took inspiration from chocolate berry and focused on shimmering browns to make your eyes pop, and pretty pinks for a pop of color. I think that's the winning color combo for a gorgeous makeup look.

Fall Foliage

As I'm sure you know, fall is my favorite season. I love the weather, the holidays, and the gorgeous changing leaves. Watching the leaves change color is something I look forward to all year long. And while Halloween is my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving is a close second. I can't wait to start a weekend of celebrating tomorrow. To get in the fall holiday spirit, I went with some fall foliage nail art.

Look Book: Blue Suede Shoes

Lately I have been wanting to up my shoe game. I have a lot of simple heels and flats, but I was lacking in the boot department, specifically booties. I have slowly been adding booties into my collection every year, from a pair of black wedges, to beige chunky heels. This year, I had my eye on blue high-heeled booties. After some searching, I found the perfect pair.

Summer Engagement Photos

Yes, I am aware of how extremely late this post is. It was 30 degrees this morning where I am, and I am just now posting summer engagement photos. To be fair, we actually took the photos in September, and I didn't get them back until the end of the month. After that I had the 5k, then it was Halloween, then my birthday...and now it's mid-November.

Ben and I actually had our official engagement photos in the fall of last year, but when we chose our wedding photographer, we got an engagement session included. Since we already had traditional photos done, we decided to have more fun with this shoot to better show our personalities and interests. We decided on a summer zoo engagement photo session.

Swatch Saturday: Julep Scorpio

Astrology has always interested me. I love the mythology and the stories behind it. A lot of people think that astrology is just your sign, and predicting what will happen that day, but it is so much more than that. Your birth chart is full of planets and asteroids inside of many different signs. The sign the sun was in when you were born is what people usually think of as their sign.

While I was born with the sun in Scorpio, I have many other signs that I resonate with. However, I do have a close connection with Scorpio. When I saw that Julep was releasing a Zodiac collection, I had to get my hands on Scorpio as soon as I could.

Halloween + 27th Birthday

This time of the year is always so busy for both myself and the blog. With both Halloween and my birthday just a week ago, I have lots that I want to share, no time to do it!

Look Book: Birthday Sequins

The last couple weeks have been a whirl-wind! From Halloween to my birthday, it was non-stop. I have a post coming up soon with more details. However, my birthday was a few days ago, and in a few more days I'll have reached my 5 year blogging anniversary. I thought that called for a celebratory outfit!

Usually for a birthday look, I would opt for a more dressed up outfit. However, I scored this sequin sweater from a recent clothing exchange (a bunch of girls bring their clothes they don't want, and take the clothes they like - it's awesome!) and birthdays called for sequins.

Dia De Los Muertos: 27th Birthday Nail Art

Happy birthday to me! Today is my 27th birthday. Wow, that sounds old! Though, I barely even look 18 Today I am celebrating by finally opening the pile of gifts my family sent to me that have been taunting me for a week, and then Ben is taking me to The Melting Pot for dinner.

Every year I choose to do Day of the Dead nail art for my birthday (26th, 25th, 24th, 23rd). Why Dia De Los Muertos nail art for my birthday? For one, today is also the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday where you celebrate loved ones that have passed on. Second, I get to extend my month Halloween nail art to my birthday!

October 2016 Round Up

Well my favorite month has come to and end, and I have to wait another year for another October. I really enjoyed celebrating Halloween all month long from pumpkin picking, to winning the house Halloween decorating contest, to Halloween weekend.

While I might be sad October is over, I have a lot to look forward to in November. Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday. Oh! And my birthday is tomorrow!

Candy Corn-O-Lanterns

It's here, It's here! It's finally Halloween weekend, my favorite weekend of the year! I have been counting down and I am so excited it's finally time to celebrate! I love Halloween so much because it's the only time of the year that you can wear the craziest stuff, and when you go in public it's totally normal. It's the one time of year where dressing strange is normal, and normal is strange. As someone that loves to be weird and loves expressing herself with crazy clothes and makeup, this time of year is pure happiness. Plus, I love cats and bats and pumpkins and skeletons!

For this weekend, and my last official Halloween nail art look for the year, I wanted to go out with some classic Halloween nail art. Even though I hate them, there is nothing more classic Halloween than candy corn. To make them even more festive, I added some jack-o-lantern faces.

The Living Dead

October is almost over, and I realized I had not done any zombie nail art. I am not actually too into zombies myself, but they are an iconic Halloween monster, and that makes them a winner in my book. I have done subtle zombie nail art looks before, but this time I wanted to go all out.

Halloween Hodgepodge

If you follow me on Instagram, you would see that I got a few gifts from my mom and my cat (I know, I sound crazy) for Halloween. Actually, my mom sends me a little gift and a card every year on Halloween. While I love my birthday, my mom calls Halloween my special day.

This year, my mom (and my cat, can't forget her!) sent me a Halloween pin and hair clips. She also sends me Halloween nail stickers every year. That means its time for another Halloween nail art sticker look!

Makeup Looks: Halloween Smokey Eye

Back in the summer, I posted a nude-toned and orange makeup look on the blog. My bestie, Sara, suggested that the look would be perfect for Halloween too! While I loved the original look because of the subtle nude and the pop of orange, I wanted to make it even more Halloween-y for October. I decided to go for a smokey eye, with a pop of orange, to play off the classic Halloween colors.

The Haunted Mansion

In my last post, I talked about my love for cats and Halloween. Another one of my major loves is Disney. From age 2 through 18, my dad took me to Disney World every other year. It is probably my favorite place on Earth. I have gone back a bunch of times as an adult, and I am just as filled with magic as when I was a kid.

This is not the first time I have done Disney Halloween nail art, last year I took inspiration from The Nightmare Before Christmas and did Sally nail art. This year, I went with of my favorite Disney rides, The Haunted Mansion.

Zombie Cat

It's pretty clear that my favorite holiday is Halloween. And, if you have been following my blog for a while, you'd know that my favorite animals are cats. So if you combine Halloween and cats, that's a winner in my book. Ben's dad knew that when he got me a little zombie kitty figurine for Chanukkah last year.

That little zombie cat has a permanent home on my nail desk. All year long I look at him while I paint my nails, just waiting for Halloween.

Halloween Makeup Looks: Harley Quinn

It is no secret that ever since the trailer for Suicide Squad came out, Harley Quinn has become insanely popular. Of course she had a strong following before then, but it seems like the movie made her more mainstream. I have been keeping this to myself because I didn't want to be cliche, but after seeing Suicide Squad, I fell in love with her too.

This year for Halloween, every girl and her sister will be dressed up as Harley Quinn. Even though I will not be going out as her this year, since lots of other girls (and guys!) will be, I wanted to put together a Harley Quinn makeup look for Halloween.

September 2016 Round Up

The end of September and the start of October has been a whirlwind! If you follow me on Instagram, you would know why. This month has been crazy busy, and full of ups and downs. Ben and I had lots of fun at the Ren Faire, and going out to celebrate his birthday. We also had a second engagement photo session done (photos from that are coming soon). Finally, after months of anticipation, we ran a 5k, which was a blast!

Sadly, at the end of this month, my grandpa passed away at 98 years old. I was very close with him and I am going to miss him so much. As I grew up we had amazing times together filled with lots of laughs and happiness. I am sad to say bye to him, but happy to know that he is finally reunited with my grandma, and they can dance together forever.

Halloween Bouquet

Happy first day of Halloween! For most people Halloween is just on October 31st, but for crazy Halloween people like myself, it goes all October long. To celebrate the first day of Halloween, my dad and I used to shop for new decorations, and decorate the house, and Ben and I are going to be continuing the tradition.

The first day of Halloween also means a month of Halloween looks on the blog! I am starting off with a subtle Halloween nail art look that I have wanted to do for a while.

5k Glow Run: Post Race Recap

I ran my very first 5k on Saturday: the Glow Run. It was a nighttime race with a glow in the dark and neon theme. I have been training and looking forward to the race for months, and now that it's over, I wanted to share my experiences.

Glow Race 5k Nails

Today is the big day! I am running with Ben in my first 5k race today. As I mentioned, this is a glow race, so the race is at night. Everything is going to be neon and glow in the dark. I am so excited to get all dressed up, and getting dressed up also means matching nails.

I knew I wanted to start with neon, so my nails could be as bright as possible. Next, I added a layer of glow in the dark top coat so that they would glow when the sun went down. Finally, I added some contrasting black nail art to match the shirt I painted, plus a big 5k.

Look Book: B+W Peplum

Peplum made a huge comeback in fashion a few years ago. Is is starting to go out of style by now? Maybe so, but I don't care! I love how feminine and flattering peplum is. I pretty much buy anything peplum that I can get my hands on!

On a recent trip to Forever 21, I saw a black and white peplum top and I instantly fell in love. Do I need another peplum top? Probably not. But I saw the black mesh top, the contrasting white, and the plunging back, and I knew it had to be mine.

Sometimes, I get inspired and pick nail polish to create art. Other times, the nail polish inspires me. That was the case with Ciate Heirloom from the 2015 Mini Mani Month advent box. This is a gorgeous duochrome that shifts from reds and oranges to purples and golds.

I love the name Heirloom and it got me thinking about family keepsakes. I added gold flakes to play off the gold shifts in the nail polish, but also because a lot of the time heirlooms are made of gold. I also included a cameo, which I feel is an iconic heirloom.

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

Have you seen those extreme couponers? It's crazy how much money you can save using coupons. I make it a point to use coupons every chance I get. I am no where near as intense as those extreme couponers, but using coupons does add up in savings, and we all know how much I love to save money.

Maryland Renaissance Festival

Every year, Ben and I like to go to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. If you have never been to a Ren Faire, its basically a lot of people dressed up, Shakespeare plays, jousting, great food, and shops. It's a lot of fun talking to people and pretending like I'm back in time. Plus I enjoy any event where I get to dress up.

Look Book: Hippie at Heart

Ever since I was a kid, I have loved the 1960's. Everything from the clothes, to the music, I was obsessed. I wished that I could have grown up dancing at music festivals and going to protests while spreading a message of love. My first tattoo was of a rainbow peace sign that I got to represent that I am a hippie at heart.

One of the destinations that Ben and I will be visit during our honeymoon is San Francisco. Of course, I had to get some flowers for my hair! I picked up a flower crown, but I knew I couldn't wait until next summer to wear it. To feature this flower crown, I needed a hippie inspired look!

August 2016 Round Up

I can't believe summer is almost over and fall is around the corner. I can't wait for the best season ever. Everything from sweaters and scarves, to Halloween and pumpkin everything, I am so excited!

August was a fun and busy month filled with family visits. Unfortunately that meant not getting as much done around the house, or for the wedding, as we would have liked. On top of that, we started training for the 5k that is later this month.

On My Way to a 5k: Prepare to Glow

I mentioned a little while ago that Ben and I have been running for almost a year now. A few months ago, I decided that I wanted to run my first 5k! For the past few weeks, Ben and I have been training, and we have been running 5ks after work once a week. I am trying to shorten my time and my goal is to be under 40 minutes.

Since I am new to running, and with my busy schedule I don't have as much time as I'd like to get better, I knew for my first 5k I wanted it to be a fun run. I needed something relaxed and not competitive so I would feel comfortable taking walk breaks, which I still need a lot of.

After searching online, Ben and I took the plunge and signed up for the Glow Run in Herndon,VA. Before the race there is a pre-run party where they will be handing out prizes for the glowiest costumes. I'm pretty sure that is a word, yes. I already knew I wanted to dress up for my first 5k, but now I knew I needed to go all out.

I don't know what's going on with me this summer, but I have been feeling uninspired. I hate all my nail polish colors, and have been feeling too lazy to recreate the looks I've pinned. After a lot of thinking I decided I wanted to do some red and summery, and I ended up with picnic nail art.

Makeup Looks: Lemon Drop

Fruit in the summer is the best. Actually it's best in the fall too (hello pumpkin everything!). I love snaking on fresh fruit, and sipping on fruity drinks. I have actually been drinking lemon water almost every day!

I just wanted to have some fun and do a simple lemon makeup look. I just used a yellow eyeshadow on my eyes and lips, and then I stuck on a few lemon fimos.

Physician's Formula Shimmer StripsCustom Eye Enhancing Shadow & Liner Nude Collection

It's pretty obvious that I love experimenting with fun makeup looks, since I have a makeup blog. I like more bold and colorful looks, but my normal day-to-day makeup is much simpler. I go to work really early, so to maximize my much needed sleep, I wear pretty basic makeup.

My go-to eye makeup for work is a nude, shimmery eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara. It started with only one eyeshadow that I wore to work, and then I bought a palette with three colors. After going through those, I wanted to add a few more shades to my rotation.

Look Book: Summer Uniform

I have gotten to that point in the summer where it is just too hot to think about choosing clothes. All I want to do is stay cool, and be comfortable. I have been pretty much wearing the same outfit every weekend (no shame).

In other news, I have new hair! I am slowly but surely getting my hair the color I want for my wedding. That means right now I am rocking wine colored hair tucked under my brunette hair. I can't wait to see it transform over the next new months!

Ice Cream

Where I live, in Northern Virginia, it has been a hot summer. We had a heat wave a few weeks ago, and this weekend the heat index is supposed to be at 110 degrees! When it's this hot, all I want to do is cool myself from the inside out. Like most people, all I want all summer long is ice cream. I can't think of too many things better than hearing the ice cream trick come down your street on a hot summer day.

Summertime is the perfect time to rock some ice cream nail art. My nails are already kind of pointy, so I thought ice cream cones would fit perfectly!

There is something so pretty about white lace. It's clean, simple, and timeless. For the past couple of summers, I had been looking all over for the perfect white lace dress. Something I could throw on and look effortless. For some reason, I just couldn't find the perfect one.

I am telling you, all the best clothes are found in clearance racks. I found this perfect dress a few weeks ago for less than $15! I have been wearing it non-stop all summer long.

Ahoy Sailor

Ben and I nicknamed our house The Beach House. It was just very coastal. Plus, the previous owners left one room, and the window treatments, sea foam green. Ben and I aren't beach people, but we felt the theme went with the house, so we made one room beachy. I was actually really easy to decorate, beach decor seems to be very popular this summer.

I grabbed Ahoy Sailor from the Ciate Mini Mani Month 2015 calendar. I loved that the color matched our Beach House. Of course I had to do some nautical nail art.

July 2016 Round Up

Summer has been crazy, and it's only getting crazier. I was so busy in July with work, family visits, celebrations, and wedding planning. The month started with 4th of July celebrations. Then my brother, sister-in-law, and mom came to visit for a long weekend, and we did the tourist thing in Washington DC. Last week, Ben and I went to an awesome event, Brew at the Zoo, to support wildlife while drinking unlimited beer.

All in the middle of this was wedding planning. We actually hit a huge milestone, all of our vendors are booked! That means all that's left is just buying and crafting things. A big weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I no longer need to contact anyone, or worry about people being booked on our date.

Look Book: On My Way to a 5K

As I have mentioned, When I moved to Virginia, I gained a lot of weight really fast. Last fall, I made the decision to go on a diet, in hopes of losing the weight before my wedding dress shopping appointment in April. After a month I still had not lost any weight, and I was feeling really disappointed in myself. That's when Ben suggested that we could go on walks after work.

Raspberry Collins

What's better than a cold drink in the middle of a heatwave? Fall, fall is better. But when fall is still months away, we need to find ways to beat the heat.

Ciate Raspberry Collins came in the 2015 Mini Mani calendar. I just love the gorgeous hot pink/ magenta color, and the smooth formula. At first, I was just going to do raspberry nails, but summertime inspired me, and I thought, why not actually do Raspberry Collins nails?!

Brew at the Zoo 2016

A few days ago Ben and I went to Brew at the Zoo, at the National Zoo in Washington DC. There were over 80 breweries at this event, both local and national. All proceeds went to supporting wildlife conservation. The Reagan Years, a local 80's cover band, was there playing live music, plus there were local food trucks there offering amazing food.
